The Future of Blogging

future of bloggingA few years back, Blogopolis was a small burg with a few neat neighborhoods populated by groupings of tech geeks.  This is no longer.  Blogopolis today is a burgeoning metropolis with hundreds of millions of people in active engagement with the online world.  Blogging is still in its beginning.  Blogopolis will likely look different come the dawn of our next New Year.

Here are ten quotes from some blogging vets who have been swimming in the seas a lot longer than us.  We look to their words as we wonder about the future of blogging:

“I am not sure what the future of blogging is, but I think it is time we started experimenting to see what we can do to keep it relevant.”

~ Jevon Mcdonald, the fast forward blog

The idea of blogging will never disappear, but the process by content is created for one blog or a series of blogs will continue to undergo radical upheavals.”

~ Chris Pirillo, internet content producer

“The future of blogging and other conversational media are entering a new phase when it comes to community information needs — they’re growing up.”

~ Dan Gillmor writer and fellow, Harvard Berkman Center

“The word blog is irrelevant, what’s important is that it is now common, and will soon be expected, that every intelligent person (and quite a few unintelligent ones) will have a media platform where they share what they care about with the world.”

~ Seth Godin, author, “Tribes.”

“The future of blogging will be an auto-synching of our lives directly to the web —often a quiet recording in the background”

~ Jeremiah Owyang, senior analyst at Forester Research

“Although new ‘right-now’ web tools like twitter and lifestreaming aggregators like friendfeed have shifted some attention from classic blogging, they’ve actually deepened the conversation and made the blog, as a place to comment, reflect, and analyze, more central than ever.”

~ Susan Mernit, co-founder People’s Software Company

“The future of blogging will have arrived when you check your favorite blog for sports news in the morning, instead of your local paper.”

~ Richard Macmanus, founder of ReadWriteWeb

“Blogging isn’t defined by a technology or the way words are laid out on a page. Rather, it’s a mindset, and as such, will be around for a long, long time, evolving and improving.”

~ Charlene Yi, Altimeter Group

“Perhaps the most interesting development is the steady evolution in the definition of a blog itself.  Microblogging platforms like Twitter and Friendfeed are the fast food equivalent of the blogging world.  Whatever happens next with blogging, it’s here to stay. And I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

~ Michael Arrington, founder of TechCrunch

“I can not imagine staying current in this fast moving, high tech world without using blogs and bloggers as a powerful filter of the
overwhelming torrent of information we all face.”

~ David Hornik, August Capital

The future of blogging has never been more pregnant.

We are learning to seek out, test, and then rely on so many people we don’t even really know for information. A blogger’s college degrees, job experience, or number of followers won’t matter as much as the answer to this: “Can I trust them as a reliable source?”

This is definitely a growing trend and it will keep developing in the future to even greater extend. I especially liked Seth Godin’s comment.

I sometimes don’t like list posts because they are hurried and come across that way.

Not this one. I really enjoyed it – nicely put together. Where are Eric Hamm and Sean Platt’s quotes? ;)

Lori: Well said, and very true. What does it matter where someone went to school? What matters is the trust in between author and audience.

Simona: Me too Simona, Seth has definitely found his voice.

Sid: Ha! Good question, Sid. Wait until next week.

Check out David Hornik’s line, “powerful filter of the
overwhelming torrent of information we all face”

Ouch! So true, sometimes it feels like the net in general (and now with the smattering of blogs) is becoming cluttered, endless, too full!
