Because I know you both have been around the blogging block, I have a question. Is there a site, or have either of you ever written a post, that has a glossary of blogging terminology? For example, I see the word “trackback” mentioned a lot, but I have no idea what it means. I have seen sites that have asked for links back to their site, but am unsure if that means to just list their site in “favorites” or if it means to write a post mentioning that site or post. In the latest video one of you, I think it was Sean, mentioned “chiclets” (I think.) All of these things will probably be second nature to me in a few months, but for now I have no clue.

Is there such a place?

On placing ads on your site- It has been my experience that if you do put adsense ads up on your site too early, the ads that get displayed will the be less targeted and lower cost ads which means that you won’t make as much money anyway.

Also, while I can’t prove it, from a SEO standpoint, ad free websites tend to climb faster in the SERPS. I rarely add ads until I am in the game (in the top 10 pages) for my primary keyword…sometimes this is months down the road.

Plus, given the fact that most blogs don’t get much traffic anyways, what is the point of making pennies a day? Wouldn’t your efforts be better placed on advertising? Just my thoughts anyway.

On how often I should post- I don’t post daily so this is obviously a bit skewed with opinion. I think that a carefully thought out post (that is longer than a normal post and has a unique angle) will outrank and get more traffic than 5-7 short posts. Why? Because while a typical blogger will be spending their time trying to think of new things to talk about, I am off promoting each post for an entire week AND formulating a gameplan for my next blog post.

Once again, I am not an authority on this subject…it is just my thoughts and what works for me personally.

@Jay: That’s a great question! This is a total guestimate as I don’t even remember what mine were, but I would say that if you’re getting 50 unique hits a day by the end of your first month, you’re doing pretty well. Obviously this could be much higher or a little lower, but that’s a tangible number to chew on.

@Sid: I hear ya! It also depends on your blogs goals. Sometimes cranking out one totally solid, in depth post a week is the best thing.
